SUMMARY:

The Open Space Police Officer is a full time sworn law enforcement professional assigned to the LVPD Open Space Unit for a limit of 3years. This position is responsible for protecting, preserving, and managing lands designated as City of Las Vegas Open Space, as well as selected areas outside City limits within San Miguel County. Officers enforce federal, state, county, and municipal laws while promoting conservation, public safety, infrastructure protection, and community education.

Officers must be knowledgeable in and operate in compliance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 7 (HSPD-7) regarding the protection of critical infrastructure and key resources.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Patrol designated Open Space properties, parks, river walk areas, City facilities, water treatment plants, and critical infrastructure sites.

• Patrol areas outside City limits within San Miguel County as assigned which is City property.

• Provide security for infrastructure and facilities inaccessible to standard patrol vehicles, including ensuring closure at designated times.

• Enforce all applicable New Mexico State Statutes, City Ordinances, and Department policies.

• Address criminal activity in accordance with LVPD policies and directives from the chain of command.

• Community Engagement & Education.

• Wild land Fire Response.

• Open Space & Infrastructure Security.

• Specialized Patrol Methods.

• Must be available for on-call assignments as required.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Personnel assigned to the Open Space Unit must:

• Possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D Driver’s License.

• Be insurable by the City’s insurance carrier.

• Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

• Be a certified New Mexico Peace Officer in good standing.

• Maintain CPR Certification.

• Maintain required in-service and firearms qualifications.

• Must have a minimum of five (5) years' as a certified Law enforcement Officer.

• National Incident Management System (NIMS) requirements certifications will be obtain within the first year if Officer hasn’t already obtained.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.

• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations.

• Considerable knowledge of city geography, street systems, routes, traffic codes, criminal codes, first aid principles, equipment operation, and department policies and procedures.

• Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition.

• Ability to operate a police vehicle, firearms, and other assigned equipment safely and effectively.

• Ability to evaluate and determine appropriate action in routine and emergency situations.

• Ability to make independent judgments with critical impact.

• Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

• Ability to interpret technical instructions in written, oral, diagram, mathematical, or schedule form.

• Ability to calculate figures such as percentages, proportions, area, circumference, and volume, and apply concepts of basic algebra, fractions, ratios, and percentages to practical situations.

• Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, citizens, and the public.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, peers, subordinates, and community members.

• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both oral and written form.

• Ability to give clear verbal and written instructions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Work performed indoors, outdoors, and occasionally in confined spaces.

• Subject to shift work, extended shifts, call-back status, and on-call status.

• Possibility of exposure to physical risk and moderate to loud noise levels.

• Regularly required to walk, sit, use hands and fingers, reach, talk, and hear.

• May be required to stand for extended periods.

• Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds or more.

• Must meet Department-established physical fitness standards.

• Requires close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
