Job Description

SUMMARY:

Performs under the direct supervision of the Solid Waste Director, Manager and Foreman. The work involves heavy manual labor in the collection of garbage, refuse and trash from residential or commercial routes by mechanical means.  Due to the scheduling and performance of the vehicle, this position requires flexibility in the hours in which the driver may be required in order to put in one day’s work.  The driver works without any direct supervision but has the responsibility to complete each day’s route during the work day. Position, will at times, require shoveling of trash and debris as well as sweeping or raking waste when required.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Drives and operates gasoline or diesel-powered packer trucks with a capacity of 10-20 cubic yards (8,450-9,900 lbs.) new body volume G.V.W. of 20,500 to 42,000 lbs.

·         Operates devices necessary for proper compaction and disposal of refuse.  This involves operating controls with both hands inside and/or outside of the packer unit.

·         Responsible for residential and handicap routes.

·         Follow all OSHA, DOT, and EPA rules and regulations.

·         Performs daily maintenance checks on all fluids and working parts of vehicles.

·         Records maintenance completed in log book. 

·         Must perform required preventive maintenance.

·         Must also assist in the replacement of tires.

·         Checks under the hood for fluid levels, and wiring.

·         Checks under the vehicle to visibly examine for fluid leaks, loose cables, ruptures in the gas tanks, hydraulic tanks, engine oil encasement, or the body.

·         Responsible for the cleanliness of the vehicle.

·         Identifies and consults with supervisor on discrepancies in route scheduling, safety, delay, mechanical failure of assigned vehicle, excess accumulation of trash at container location.

·         Assist manually in pickup of excess rash when a mechanical breakdown of equipment has caused delays in service.

·         Cleans out packer body at day’s end and lubricates the floor rail, removes excess debris along the rail and channel and the packer body.

·         Examines truck and packer body, on, over, and under for cracks, loose bolts, nuts, etc.

·         Driver will be required to climb a ladder in order to inspect the top of the packer body.

·         Manually maneuvers trash bins that are overturned.

·         Replaces headlamps and tail lamps when necessary.

·         Performs other related duties as required.

 

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Some experience in performing heavy manual work.

  • One (1) year experience working in Solid Waste.

 

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess and maintain an insurable New Mexico Class B CDL Driver’s License.

  • Must be able to work all shifts and overtime when required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions. 

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and other employees.

  • Ability to deal with the public in a pleasant, courteous, and tactful manner. 

  • Ability to perform heavy manual work.

  • Ability to operate various hand controls.

  • Knowledge of New Mexico traffic regulations.

  •  Must be knowledgeable of all types of mechanical maintenance and upkeep equipment for service vehicles, and packer trucks including tire changing, hydraulics, pressure hoses, inflators, jacks.

  •  Must have full knowledge of the operation devices in the truck and compactor. 

  • Complete knowledge of the operation and maintenance of garbage trucks.

  •  Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions of the work. 

  • Knowledge of the street system of the City of Las Vegas.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work is performed primarily outdoors at work site locations.

  • Work is performed in all types of inclement weather conditions. Some travel may be required.

  • Operates City vehicles and heavy equipment.

  • Required to sit for prolonged periods of time.

  • Occasionally may be required to work beyond normal work day to complete assignments as directed by the Solid Waste Director.
