NEWS RELEASE: City Urges Caution as Gallinas River and Low-Water Crossings Remain Elevated

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The City of Las Vegas and local public safety officials are urging residents to use extreme caution following significant rainfall overnight in and around the area, which has caused the Gallinas River to rise rapidly with increased speed and debris. The river is currently running approximately 3½ feet higher than yesterday, and water levels continue to fluctuate.

Recent debris removal within city limits has helped improve water flow through portions of the Gallinas River. However, changing water levels continue to be observed and may be the result of additional debris moving downstream from upstream areas. Because conditions can change quickly, public safety officials continue to urge residents to remain cautious and stay away from the river corridor.

Residents are strongly advised to avoid the Gallinas River Walk Park and use caution near bridge and river areas, including Grand Avenue, Independence Avenue, Mills Avenue and Bridge Street. Despite the dangerous conditions, people continue to enter the river corridor. The public should not enter the river or river corridor for any reason while these conditions continue. There will be zero tolerance for individuals entering restricted or unsafe areas. Law enforcement will continue patrolling these areas and may direct individuals to leave for their safety. Residents should also remain alert for increased wildlife activity, including deer, elk, bears and other animals moving into populated areas.

El Camino, Cinder Road and Cunningham Road have been closed due to flooding. These areas are known to experience flooding, and portions of roadway and pavement may already be compromised. Motorists should not attempt to cross flooded roads or drive around barricades, as water can conceal washed-out pavement, erosion, debris and other hazards.

If you observe any drastic changes in the Gallinas River, including sudden rises in water level, increased debris, unusual water flow or other hazardous conditions, please contact the appropriate authorities immediately. For emergencies, call 911. For non-emergency concerns, contact Las Vegas Dispatch at 505-425-7504 and select option 1.

Sandbag distribution will also continue today until 3:00 p.m., or while supplies last, at Public Works behind Las Vegas City Hall, 1700 N. Grand Avenue. A limited supply remains. Sandbags are available to City of Las Vegas and San Miguel County residents on a first-come, first-served basis, with a limit of 10 per vehicle. For more information, contact Public Works at 505-426-3294.

The City and public safety officials ask residents to continue monitoring conditions, obey all closures and barricades, avoid low-water crossings and stay away from the Gallinas River until conditions improve. Updates regarding weather conditions, road conditions and other public safety concerns will be shared as information becomes available. The safety of our residents remains the highest priority.
