PSA 10/28/2026 3:00 p.m. - Honoring Our First Responders: The People Who Show Up for Las Vegas

In Las Vegas, New Mexico, community means looking out for one another. It means showing up when a neighbor needs help and standing together during life’s most difficult moments. On National First Responders Day, we recognize the men and women who do just that, day after day, to keep our community safe.
To the Las Vegas Police Department and Dispatch, Las Vegas Fire Department, San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office, San Miguel County Fire Department, New Mexico State Police, New Mexico Highlands University Campus Police, American Medical Response, City of Las Vegas/San Miguel County Emergency Management, and all who serve our area, thank you for being there when our community needs you most.
From responding to emergencies on our streets and highways to reaching families throughout San Miguel County, your work makes a difference every day. Whether you are fighting fires, protecting our neighborhoods, providing lifesaving medical care, or answering a 911 call, you bring skill, courage, and compassion to moments when people need it most.
We know your service comes with sacrifices that often go unseen. It means missed holidays, interrupted family dinners, long shifts, and difficult calls that can stay with you long after you return home. These sacrifices matter, and we are grateful for each of you who continues to answer the call.
In a close-knit community like ours, the person you help may be a friend, a neighbor, or someone you have known for years. A reassuring voice, a helping hand, or simply showing up can make all the difference during a frightening moment. You may not always hear the words, but your presence brings comfort, hope, and reassurance to the people you serve.
We are also grateful for the teamwork among our local, county, state, campus, and emergency medical responders. When emergencies happen, our community depends on you to work together, support one another, and put the safety of others first.
To our first responders, you are more than the people we call in an emergency. You are our neighbors, friends, and family members. Your service matters, your sacrifices are seen, and your dedication makes Las Vegas and San Miguel County stronger.
On behalf of the City of Las Vegas and our residents, thank you for your courage, compassion, and commitment. We are proud of the work you do and grateful for the people you are. Please know that your community stands behind you, just as you stand ready for us.
****With appreciation from Mayor David Romero, Mayor Pro-Tem Marvin Martinez, Councilwoman Barbara Perea-Casey, Councilman Benito Pacheco, Councilman David Ulibarri, City Manager Robert A. Anaya, Judge Eddie Trujillo, and all City of Las Vegas staff.
