PSA 3/19/2025 1:00 p.m.: Proper Sewer Use: Keep Our System Clean and Functioning

The city has been experiencing an alarming number of clogged sewer lines and pump station issues caused by items being flushed down toilets or poured down drains that shouldn't be there. The sewer system is designed to handle only water, human waste, and tissue paper.

What NOT to flush down toilets or pour down drains:

  • Cloth rags, towels, or wipes (even if labeled "flushable")

  • Paper products (other than toilet paper)

  • Medications (prescription or over the counter)

  • Feminine hygiene products of any kind

  • Beauty products, Q-Tips, and dental floss

  • Plastics, grease (especially cooking grease)

  • Garden supplies (pesticides, fertilizers)

  • Paint, varnish, paint remover, motor oil, or any explosive materials

Why It Matters

Improper waste disposal can lead to sewer backups into homes and businesses, resulting in costly repairs at the owner's expense. Violating sewer use regulations under Municipal Code §340-56 may result in fines up to $300 or 90 days imprisonment.

Properly dispose of these items in the trash or through designated disposal programs for chemicals and medications.
