At last Wednesday’s City Council meeting, Mayor David Romero and the Governing Body approved resolutions reestablishing the Youth Commission and Keep America Beautiful (KAB) Advisory Committee. Both initiatives reflect the City’s commitment to strengthening community involvement, encouraging civic engagement, and creating opportunities for residents to help shape the future of Las Vegas.
The Youth Commission, a priority initiative of Mayor Romero, will provide local youth and young adults ages 14–21 with an opportunity to share their ideas, develop leadership skills, participate in local government, and help address issues important to young people and families throughout the community.
“The voices of our young people matter,” said Mayor Romero. “Creating the Youth Commission gives our young people a seat at the table, encourages civic pride, and helps us better understand their ideas, concerns, and hopes for the future of our city.”
Membership is intended to include representation from Las Vegas City Schools, West Las Vegas Schools, home-school students, charter and private schools, New Mexico Highlands University, Luna Community College, United World College-USA, youth-serving organizations, and young adults employed within the community.
The Youth Commission will focus on areas including education, recreation, public safety, health, workforce development, community pride, water conservation, arts, culture, tourism, and partnerships with schools and youth-serving organizations. Members will also help plan at least one youth-led community event and complete one community service or improvement project each year.
The Keep America Beautiful Advisory Committee will advise and assist the City in promoting litter prevention, beautification, environmental sustainability, recycling, waste reduction, volunteer engagement, and other initiatives that enhance the quality of life and appearance of the community. The committee will work in partnership with the City’s Solid Waste Director.
Mayor Romero is now accepting applications for both the Youth Commission and the Keep America Beautiful Advisory Committee. Interested applicants should submit a letter of interest including their name, address, and contact phone number to Hailey Lucero, Administrative Assistant to the Mayor, at hlucero@lasvegasnm.gov.
