PSA 8/25/2026 3:00 p.m.: Increased Bear, Mountain Lion and Wildlife Sightings in Las Vegas

The City of Las Vegas is reminding residents to remain alert following an increase in bear, mountain lion and other wildlife sightings throughout the city and surrounding areas. Sightings increased over the weekend and have included wildlife traveling through residential neighborhoods and along city streets, not only areas near the outskirts of the community. With continued dry and drought conditions, increased wildlife activity may continue as animals travel farther in search of food and water.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions around their homes and neighborhoods to reduce wildlife encounters and help protect both people and animals.

Help Keep Wildlife Away

• Secure your trash in a sturdy container and place it outside as close to collection time as possible.

• Bring pet food and water indoors, especially overnight.

• Keep pets indoors when possible.

• Remove bird feeders when bears or other large wildlife are active in your area.

• Clean and store outdoor grills after use.

• Pick up fallen fruit from trees and gardens.

• Secure compost and other potential food sources.

• Do not intentionally feed wildlife.

• Supervise children and pets, particularly during early morning and evening hours.

• Remain alert when walking through neighborhoods, especially around areas with vegetation, open spaces or wildlife activity.

  
  

Stay Alert

Residents should remember that wildlife can appear anywhere in the community, including residential streets and neighborhoods. Avoid approaching wildlife for photographs or attempting to move or feed an animal.

If you encounter a bear, mountain lion or other large wildlife within the City of Las Vegas:

• If the animal poses an immediate threat to people or public safety, call 911.

• For non-emergency wildlife concerns within the city, contact Las Vegas Police Department Dispatch at 505-425-7504, Option 1.

• For wildlife-related assistance, residents may also contact the New Mexico Department of Wildlife at 1-888-248-6866 during regular business hours. For conservation officer assistance outside regular business hours, call New Mexico State Police Dispatch at 505-841-9256.

  
  

Keep a safe distance and do not approach, corner or attempt to capture the animal. As drought conditions continue, wildlife may travel farther than usual in search of food and water. Taking simple precautions can help reduce encounters and keep residents, pets and wildlife safe.
