Las Vegas, NM — The Las Vegas Fire Department’s Blue Team took center stage earlier this month during an intensive round of fire training evolutions, reinforcing the department’s dedication readiness, resilience, and teamwork. Overseen by Deputy Fire Chief/Fire Marshal Randal Haugen, with support from Blue Team’s Lieutenant Roberto Ortiz, the session focused on core firefighting tactics including bumper line deployment, bunker gear drills, hose loads, and ladder operations.
Conducted under high-pressure, realistic conditions using the First Due fire response system, the training was part of a structured departmental rotation aimed at ensuring every firefighter completes a full cycle of evolutions each quarter. The Green Team launched the cycle earlier in April, with Red Team up next.
Firefighting is a learned skill and inherently complex, with many moving parts. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect — a principle Haugen consistently reinforced in the drills. “If you don’t know the answer, ask questions. These drills aren’t made to beat you up — they’re here so we can practice,” Haugen reminded the team. “I’d rather mistakes happen today in training than during a fire.”
Probationary firefighters, easily identified by their red uniforms, gained essential experience, while veteran members refined skills and mentored newcomers. More than just a skills refresher, the evolutions are about leadership development, unity, and maintaining the standard of excellence the Las Vegas Fire Department is known for.
As the department continues to invest in rigorous, hands-on training, it sends a clear message: excellence in the fire service is earned every day — through preparation, teamwork, and the relentless pursuit of readiness.
