While we welcome the rain, excessive rainfall can sometimes pose a serious hazard. City officials are urging residents to avoid River Walk Park and stay away from the Gallinas River at this time. The river is currently running about three feet higher than Sunday and is flowing rapidly. Parks employees Reyes Martinez and Enrique Hurst were out early this morning assessing potential hazards in the area.

A Flood Watch remains in effect until 6:00 p.m. today for Las Vegas, NM, and nearby areas. Up to 2 inches of additional rain are expected, which will increase the risk of flash flooding. Some roads are already seeing overflow and may become impassable. Do not drive or walk through floodwaters, as even shallow water can be dangerous. Low-lying roads and water-covered crossings are especially hazardous.
