1/30/2026: City Spotlight in the Las Vegas Optic Did You Know? Contractors Must Call NM811 Before Digging

Did you know that contractors in New Mexico are legally required to contact NM811 before excavating, blasting, or moving earth in any way? This critical step ensures underground utility lines are properly located and marked, helping prevent injuries, property damage, and costly service disruptions. Calls must be made at least two business days before excavation, and NM811 is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with web access available 24/7.

In support of safe excavation practices, the City of Las Vegas Gas Division recently hosted a comprehensive training session, bringing together nearly 100 participants from local government, utility providers, schools, contractors, and community organizations. The training emphasized how to request a line locate, how the ticketing process works, and the importance of properly marking underground utilities before starting any digging project.

Representatives from a wide range of organizations attended, including City of Las Vegas crews, Zia Natural Gas, Raton Natural Gas Company, Village of Wagon Mound, local propane companies, NM811, the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (NMPRC), the local housing authority, contractors, plumbers, West Las Vegas and Las Vegas City Schools, New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU), Luna Community College, New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT), New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute (NMBHI), San Miguel County Public Works, and local excavation rental companies.

“This training is critical to protecting lives, property, and essential infrastructure,” said David Marquez, Gas / Solid Waste Director. “It’s encouraging to see contractors, city employees, plumbers, landscapers, and partner agencies come together to understand that knowing where underground utilities are located before digging is not just a best practice—it’s a responsibility. One call to 811 can prevent serious injury, service outages, and costly damage. It’s the law in New Mexico and the safest way to ensure excavation projects do not disrupt water, gas, electric, or communication lines.”

Looking ahead, the City of Las Vegas plans to host at least one public awareness session on excavation safety each year. By featuring a variety of presenters and covering topics related to utilities, excavation, and regulatory compliance, the City aims to keep the community informed, vigilant, and safe.

The Risks of Not Calling 811

Failing to call 811 before digging can have serious consequences, including injury or loss of life, damage to underground utilities that disrupt service and require emergency response, gas line damage creating hazardous conditions, costly property damage, and potential fines or enforcement actions. One missed call can result in service outages, expensive repairs, and even legal liability in severe cases.

The City thanks all participants for their dedication to safe excavation practices and compliance with state and federal laws. Special recognition goes to Kellen Tetreault, NM811 Public Outreach Coordinator, and the Gas Department for coordinating the training. A heartfelt thank-you also goes to New Mexico Highlands University for the generous use of its facilities and outstanding hospitality, which made the training possible. “It’s inspiring to see our community come together for safety and education,” said Marquez. “We look forward to continuing these efforts to protect our community.”
