Las Vegas, NM — The City of Las Vegas and surrounding areas will be under a Flood Watch from Tuesday, June 24 at 12:00 p.m. through Wednesday, June 25 at 6:00 a.m. Widespread rain showers and thunderstorms are expected Tuesday afternoon, with heavy rainfall increasing the risk of flooding, particularly in the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon burn scar area.
“The City of Las Vegas Fire and Police Departments are taking proactive measures to prepare for any potential flooding caused by incoming precipitation,” said Fire Chief Steven Spann. “We currently have mutual aid swift water units in the area to support our local teams, should the need arise.”
Chief Spann urged residents to use extreme caution during this weather event. “We remind everyone to stay out of rivers and to avoid crossing any flooded areas. It only takes a small amount of water to create a dangerous situation,” he said.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring local media outlets for real-time weather and safety updates.
“We are continually assessing the situation and will provide updates and guidance to the public as needed,” added Police Chief Caleb Marquez.
“Please call 911 if you need immediate assistance. Public safety officials will be monitoring low-water crossings and will close areas as necessary. We strongly advise everyone to avoid low-lying and flood-prone areas, including Riverwalk Park,” said Chief Marquez.
The City is working closely with San Miguel County to secure additional resources, including sandbags, to assist with flood prevention and emergency response.
