Las Vegas, NM - This past Wednesday, the City of Las Vegas kicked off the long-awaited El Creston Circle Road Improvements project with a groundbreaking ceremony, marking the start of a major transformation in the Westside area. After years of waiting and the accumulation of necessary funding, the $4.2 million project will address long-standing drainage issues that have caused persistent water pooling and will include key infrastructure upgrades such as ADA-compliant gutters, sidewalks, ramps, and pavement rehabilitation. Additionally, signage will be updated for speed limits, children at play, and stop signs.
Mayor David Romero opened the ceremony by expressing his gratitude to the Governing Body, Arnold Lopez, Public Works Director, Danny Gurule, Public Works Manager, and all staff who contributed to bringing this project to life. Romero also reflected on the project's long history, which began six years ago when he was serving as City Councilor for the ward. He shared, “Six years ago, as I was going door to door, many residents voiced concerns about the neglected roads and park in the area. That was my commitment to you, and here we are six years later. It does take a lot of effort to make it happen.” Romero also highlighted recent upgrades to the local park, which include improvements to sidewalks, concrete work, playground equipment, park benches, and shade structures.
Romero expressed his appreciation to City Councilor Marvin Martinez, who took over as city councilor for Ward 4 after he was appointed as mayor last January, for continuing to champion the completion of the project. Martinez also revealed that an additional area, a small cul-de-sac on the side of El Creston Circle known as Don Pedro Circle, would be included in the project, thanks to funding made available by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT).
State Senator Pete Campos, who attended the ceremony, was also recognized for his ongoing support of the community. “We are going to continue to make a difference. Thank you to each and every one of you. This is definitely a great project,” said Campos. “This is one neighborhood, and we are working on other neighborhoods throughout the community of Las Vegas.”
State Representative Anita Gonzales also addressed the crowd, expressing her gratitude to all those who worked to make the project a reality. Gonzales, who holds a personal connection to the area, offered her continued assistance in her newly elected role.
Walter Adams, NMDOT Commission Chairman and local resident, spoke passionately about the project’s importance. “The city had a vision, had a plan, and they came to us. I’m blessed that the governor put me in a position to help out this community. Growing up, my dad always said, ‘Never forget who you are and never forget where you came from,’ and I never will.” He emphasized the need for rural areas to collaborate and share resources, as they often receive less funding than urban areas. Adams also highlighted other projects in the city, including improvements to Legion Drive, Plaza Park, and University Avenue, and noted that $15 million in funding had been allocated for future projects. He thanked NMDOT staff members John Herrera, Monica Duran, Adam Romero, Arthur Romero, and Travis Martinez for their support.
This project is being funded by the New Mexico Department of Transportation through their Transportation Project Fund, with funding secured in two separate cycles. Miller Engineering will provide plans, design, and construction management, while Desert Fox Paving will serve as the project contractor. Desert Fox Paving representatives were on hand at the ceremony to answer any questions from the community.
The project is set to officially begin on Monday, April 14, weather permitting and is expected to be completed by the end of fall 2025. During the construction period, Creston Circle will experience intermittent road closures and detours, particularly in the areas where drainage work and pavement rehabilitation will take place. Residents are advised to follow posted signs and detour routes to ensure safety and minimize disruptions. Additionally, access to local businesses and residences will be maintained, but drivers should expect delays as crews complete the necessary upgrades.
