NEWS RELEASE FROM LVFD: Quick Response Saves Home in New Year’s Structure Fire

ree

On Thursday, January 1, at approximately 10:30 a.m., the Las Vegas Fire Department responded to a gas fire on 9th Street that quickly developed into a structure fire. The fire involved a single-family home, and crews arrived on the scene within minutes. Thanks to their rapid response, firefighters were able to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes and structures. No injuries were reported among residents or fire personnel, and everyone on the property was safely evacuated. The fire has been determined to be unintentional.

Fire Lieutenant Johnny Vigil of Red Team described the scene and praised the team’s efforts. “When we were headed to the location, we could see a huge plume of smoke from blocks away, and we knew this fire had the potential to be serious. Flames were already visible when we arrived, and the interior of the home was at risk. The crew worked quickly and calmly, communicating every step, and we were able to contain the fire before it spread to neighboring homes. Everyone got out safely, and the damage was limited. I’m really proud of how the team handled the situation—they stayed focused, worked together, and got the job done.”

The Las Vegas Fire Department also extends gratitude to all local agencies that assisted on the scene, including the Las Vegas Police Department and city utility crews.

Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility. The department encourages residents to check smoke detectors regularly, create and practice home evacuation plans, and keep flammable items away from heat sources. Taking these simple, proactive steps can help prevent fires and protect the safety of your family and your community.
