The water leak identified earlier today has been successfully located after significant excavation this afternoon, and it has been isolated from the current system. Repairs will take place over the next couple of days. Meanwhile, the Water Treatment Plant has continued producing water throughout the day. Water production was slightly slowed down this afternoon to help manage water pressure as it is reintroduced into the system. It is crucial that this process is not rushed to avoid a water hammer.
A water hammer is a sudden surge in pressure that can cause significant damage to the waterline infrastructure, and it must be avoided. As part of this process, our water distribution team will be opening water valves throughout the city and flushing of fire hydrants to properly direct the water and relieve air from the system. If you see this occurring, please know it is a required part of the process.
With the ongoing adjustments to pressure and flow, the City of Las Vegas advises residents to proceed with switching their water heaters and boilers back to normal operation. However, residents may continue to see increased sediment and discoloration in the water, which is expected. Once normal operations are restored, it is recommended that you flush your water heater and boiler according to the manufacturer's instructions to help remove any sediment buildup, or contact a certified service provider for assistance.
Some residents have also reported hearing thudding sounds from toilets, which is caused by increased water pressure going through the lines and is common during situations like this. This will likely continue until the process is complete.
As water moves through the system, it is important for residents to report any unusual pooling of water that could indicate a water leak by calling 505-617-6579. We continue to ask residents who still have access to running water to limit usage to essential needs only, defined as consumption, personal hygiene, medical needs, and meal preparation.
A precautionary boil advisory has been in place since Friday afternoon as a preventive safety measure and is not a state-mandated status but is recommended. This advisory is issued when conditions suggest a potential issue, with the City’s top priority being the safety and well-being of its citizens. If conditions change, the public will be promptly informed.
Water delivery to homes currently experiencing complete outages will continue tomorrow throughout the day. There is a long list, and our staff is working diligently to deliver water. If you haven't already left a message, please call 505-617-6579 to be added to the delivery list. All messages have been logged, and staff are aware of the areas in need. They will continue working through the identified areas to ensure water delivery.
We are anticipating improvements throughout the night, into tomorrow, and Monday. We ask for continued patience as we navigate this situation. We understand the frustration, and our city staff is working around the clock to make positive progress. We are beginning to see encouraging signs of improvement.
