PSA 5/12/2025 10:30 a.m.: Low-Lying Roads Remain Hazardous – Gallinas River Still Running High

The City of Las Vegas urges all residents to remain vigilant as flooding continues to affect many low-lying roadways and the River Walk area, both within city limits and in surrounding location. These areas have been impacted since last Monday due to rising waters from the Gallinas River. Recent warm weather has rapidly melted snowpack in higher elevations, keeping water levels high and conditions unstable.

Public safety officials strongly warn against driving through flooded streets or walking along submerged sections of the River Walk. Despite repeated warnings, many individuals continue to put themselves at risk by entering these hazardous zones. Floodwaters can conceal debris, potholes, broken glass, tree branches, and even downed power lines. All of these pose serious safety threats to both pedestrians and drivers. Many roadways are already showing signs of severe erosion.

Floodwater is also frequently contaminated with sewage, chemicals, gasoline, and other pollutants, posing significant health risks. Exposure can lead to infections, illness, or injury. In addition, vehicles that pass through floodwaters may suffer severe and lasting mechanical damage.

If you come upon a flooded roadway or path: "Turn Around, Don’t Drown." Barricades and warning signs have been placed for public safety. Do not ignore or bypass them. Law enforcement presence will be increased in these areas to ensure compliance and protect the public.

Floodwaters, whether in familiar or unfamiliar areas, are dangerous and deceptive. They should always be avoided. Walking or driving through floodwater risks not only your life but also the lives of emergency responders who may be called to rescue you.

By recognizing these dangers and following flood safety guidelines, you can protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community.
