- 2025 Fiestas De Las Vegas Feature: Las Vegas Fire Department Urges Fireworks Safety and Caution Amid Monsoon Season
As the Fourth of July approaches, the Las Vegas Fire Department (LVFD) is reminding residents to prioritize safety during the holiday celebrations. Although current conditions do not meet the requirements to impose fireworks restrictions under New Mexico State Statute Chapter 60-2C-8.1, Fire Chief Steven Spann emphasizes that the fire danger remains real, and residents should act responsibly. Each year, the department sees a noticeable reduction in fireworks activity across the city, lasting approximately 30 to 45 minutes, while the official fireworks show takes place. This temporary lull allows emergency personnel to focus their efforts in the immediate area of the display. This year’s official fireworks show will be held on the evening of July 4. It will be performed by Precision Fireworks of Era, Texas, the same vendor that delivered last year’s highly praised event. Chief Spann encourages the community to attend the professional show and enjoy a safe celebration without relying on personal fireworks. “While there are currently no restrictions in place, we ask everyone to use good judgment when handling fireworks,” said Chief Spann. “Public safety is our top priority, and we want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable holiday.” Fireworks Safety Reminders: · Never use fireworks while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. · Always wear protective eyewear when using or observing fireworks. · Never hold lit fireworks in your hands or light them indoors. · Use fireworks only on a hard, flat, level surface outdoors. · Keep fireworks away from buildings, vehicles, dry grass, and flammable materials. · Never throw or aim fireworks at people. · Do not allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers. · Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby. · Light fireworks one at a time, then move away quickly. · Never attempt to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Weather Alert: Rain and River Safety Rain remains a possibility during the holiday period. The Las Vegas Fire Department is trained in swift water rescue and is actively monitoring weather conditions. Residents are urged to stay updated by following weather alerts and safety advisories. If water levels rise, residents should avoid the Gallinas River entirely. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads or low-water crossings under any circumstances. These areas can become hazardous very quickly and pose serious risk to life and property. “Our crews will be on duty around the clock to ensure public safety,” said Chief Spann. “Please stay alert, make safe choices, and help us protect the community.” For more information, follow the Las Vegas Fire Department and City of Las Vegas on Facebook or contact the fire department directly at 505-425-6321.

- Fiestas De Las Vegas Business Heritage Honorees: Mr and Mrs. Matias Jr. and Connie Martinez
Matias Jr. and Connie Martinez began their entrepreneurial journey in the early 1960s with the founding of Martinez & Sons Oil Co. Their ambition and work ethic quickly led to expansion, and by 1968, they had added a propane business to their growing enterprise. Their first operation was established in Las Vegas, New Mexico, followed by an expansion to Pecos in 1971. In 1977, they acquired an existing propane company in Santa Rosa, and by 1983, they had launched a fourth location in Santa Fe. Their final propane operation opened in Mora in 1988, marking a significant milestone in the company's growth. Over the years, the Martinez family's business interests diversified well beyond oil and propane. They added a laundromat, a tire store, convenience stores, and rental properties. With the support of their children, new ventures were launched, including the Las Vegas Civic Center, developed with their daughter Cynthia. Their son Marvin and his wife Mary Edna established the Las Vegas NAPA Store and the Pecos NAPA Store. Meanwhile, Matt and his wife Martha managed Thunderbird Petroleum, which later became Sangre de Cristo Broadcasting Company, home to five radio stations. Through the continued growth of Martinez Gas Company, the family expanded their operations to include a tank manufacturing business and a multi-state transportation company. With more than 50 years in business, Matias Jr. and Connie Martinez have employed hundreds of people and served more than 10,000 clients across New Mexico and beyond. Though now retired, they remain actively involved as trusted advisors to their family, offering guidance in both business and life. Their family legacy continues with their daughter Frances, a surgical nurse specializing in cardiac care and medical devices. Matias Jr. and Connie are proud grandparents to eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The City of Las Vegas extends its deepest gratitude to the Martinez family for their decades of commitment to local enterprise. - Fiestas and More Feature: Honoring Mr. Valdez: A Pillar of the Las Vegas Community
Mr. Anselmo “Chemo” Valdez began his journey with Gamble’s on September 10, 1956, joining a business that had been part of the Las Vegas, New Mexico community since 1946. Through hard work and dedication, he eventually became the store manager in the 1960s. In 1978, he received national recognition when he was named Store Manager of the Year, a testament to his leadership and commitment to service. His business philosophy was simple yet powerful: “If we don’t have it, we can find it for you.” This motto is remembered fondly by his family and customers. Gamble’s was originally corporately owned, but Mr. Valdez purchased the store in June 1983. Under his ownership, it became more than just a retail shop. It was a welcoming space where he offered help to residents and visitors alike, often sharing stories and historical knowledge about Las Vegas. Mr. Valdez also dedicated himself to the broader community. He served on the Las Vegas-San Miguel Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Board of Directors for the Bank of Las Vegas, which is now Southwest Community Bank. He also played an important role as president of the Fiestas de Las Vegas Committee, where his love for community events truly shined. He especially enjoyed the Fourth of July and was known to dress up as a clown to entertain children and families. His playful personality and great sense of humor made him beloved by many. He was known for joking around, laughing often, and lifting the spirits of those around him. In a memorable city fundraiser years ago, he volunteered to be "jailed" and had to be bailed out, creating laughter and joy for all who took part. Mr. Valdez leaves behind a lasting legacy, not just as a successful business owner, but as a generous and deeply involved community member. He helped shape Las Vegas, New Mexico into the unique and beautiful place it is today. We are deeply grateful for his many years of service and the positive impact he had on so many lives.
