  • Fiestas and More Feature: Honoring Mr. Valdez: A Pillar of the Las Vegas Community

Mr. Anselmo “Chemo” Valdez began his journey with Gamble’s on September 10, 1956, joining a business that had been part of the Las Vegas, New Mexico community since 1946. Through hard work and dedication, he eventually became the store manager in the 1960s. In 1978, he received national recognition when he was named Store Manager of the Year, a testament to his leadership and commitment to service. His business philosophy was simple yet powerful: “If we don’t have it, we can find it for you.”  This motto is remembered fondly by his family and customers. Gamble’s was originally corporately owned, but Mr. Valdez purchased the store in June 1983. Under his ownership, it became more than just a retail shop. It was a welcoming space where he offered help to residents and visitors alike, often sharing stories and historical knowledge about Las Vegas. Mr. Valdez also dedicated himself to the broader community. He served on the Las Vegas-San Miguel Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Board of Directors for the Bank of Las Vegas, which is now Southwest Community Bank. He also played an important role as president of the Fiestas de Las Vegas Committee, where his love for community events truly shined. He especially enjoyed the Fourth of July and was known to dress up as a clown to entertain children and families. His playful personality and great sense of humor made him beloved by many. He was known for joking around, laughing often, and lifting the spirits of those around him. In a memorable city fundraiser years ago, he volunteered to be "jailed" and had to be bailed out, creating laughter and joy for all who took part. Mr. Valdez leaves behind a lasting legacy, not just as a successful business owner, but as a generous and deeply involved community member. He helped shape Las Vegas, New Mexico into the unique and beautiful place it is today. We are deeply grateful for his many years of service and the positive impact he had on so many lives.
